Why adding data items in the Dev environment affects my report layout?

Hi everyone,

I keep find my report layout changed whenever i add data items or data sets in the dev environment. For example, when i add a block of datasets i find and exra blank page on my report when i run it. What's the correlation between this too?

  • Your dataset is basically just an XML file - so if you insert additional data or removes other, then that will have impact on your XML file. The easiest way to see is to use the report preview function and Help > About this report. Here you can save the XML file and compare it exactly.

    When you add additional blocks, then you normally have to start using filters in your tables in RDLC. Example:

    Old Data Set
    Header
    Field1
    Field2
    Lines
    Line1
    Line2
    Totals

    Lets say you add a data block with comment lines:
    Header
    Field1
    Field2
    HeaderComments
    HeaderCommentLine
    Lines
    Line1
    Line2
    Totals

    Here you would need to tell the report not to include the comment lines with your item lines. Otherwise then the result is like you say. A lot of blank lines and empty spaces.
