Backup one company – the best kept secret in Dynamics NAV 2015

Is it just me or is this the best kept secret in Dynamics NAV 2015?

Today my customer Thomas Ditlev from ACO Nordic asked me to bring a backup of the data in a database to a colleague, nothing new about that.

I totally lost my cool, when he started the backup functionality inside Dynamics NAV, exported the data and saved it on my USB drive.

When he realized that I had no idea that something like that was possible, he danced a little Indian dance exclaiming: “Ha’ I found out first”

So Here it is for all of you who, like me, totally missed the fact, that the old backup/restore functionality has returned to Dynamics NAV:

It looks almost exactly like the old “Classic” functionality.

It makes a file with the extention .navidata:

Importing the file in another database:

But what is this?

Was that a C/AL functionality?

Looking into page 9900 and 9901 it seems that there are two new system functions:

  • IMPORTDATA
  • EXPORTDATA

Just imagine, what we can do with a codeunit and the Job Queue.

Maybe I should get a refund of my entry fee of DIrections EMEA in Poznan in 2014 Smiley
