D365 Business Central - Dimension Corrections Tool for GL Entries

Microsoft has introduced Dimension Correction Tool in Dynamics 365 Business Central 18 to correct the GL Entry Dimensions.

Before this version user was not able to correct the GL Entry Dimension through Standard functionality of D365 BC, but now Microsoft has provided the capability in BC 18 to correct the GL Entry Dimension without any customized tool or utility.

User can now correct dimensions for general ledger (G/L) entries to ensure your financial reporting gives you accurate insights without having to make notes of temporary data entry mistakes. For one or more G/L entries, you can change the dimension values, add dimensions, or remove them.

Also, there are different way from where user can run the “Dimension Correction Tool” for GL Entries-

  1. Run directly from General Ledger Entries
  2. Run from GL Registers
  3. Run from Posted General Journal
  4. Search and directly Run “Dimension Correction.”

In below steps, we will discuss how we can correct the Dimension through the General Ledger Entries-

Step 1: Search for General Ledger Entries and Open the GL Entries-

Step 2: you can select single GL Entry or also can select multiple GL Entries for dimension correction. In this example I have selected 2 GL Entries and then click on Entryà Correct Dimensions-

Step 3: Once you click on “Correct Dimension” action, then the Dimension Correction page will open for the selected GL Entries with status as “Draft”-

Step 4: Now you can do the correction in the dimension and add the description why you are changing the dimension. I have entered the description and Changed the AREA and BUSINESSGROUP Dimension as per below screenshot. Also, there is “Update Analysis View” Boolean on this page in case user also want to update the “Analysis by Dimension View”.

Step 5: These Dimension changes are in Draft stage, we should run “Validate Dimension Change” before running the Dimension Correction to make sure it’s not breaking anything. Click on “Validate Dimension Change” and system will open the Request Page, here you can run this as “Run Immediately” or also can schedule as per your requirement. I have chosen “Run Immediately.” And Click on OK.

Step 6: Once I run the “Validate Dimension Change”, I can see the “Validation Status” as The dimension correction was validated on 07/14/21 04:58 PM.

Step 7: Once the Dimension are validated you can run the Dimension Correction by clicking on Run Action on the Ribbon-

Step 8: Once you click on Run Action, system will open the Request page, here also you can run this as “Run Immediately” or also can schedule as per your requirement. I have chosen “Run Immediately.” And click on OK.

Step 9: Once this is done you can check the history by clicking on General Ledger Entries action “History of Dimension Corrections” and it will show the status of Dimension correction. For our correction it is completed-

Step 10: Also, in the history you can perform other action like Undo, Copy to Draft, Validate Undo Dimension change etc.

This tool is very useful when a data entry mistake happens, either in journal entries, document posting, or data added through APIs, it distorts the picture of the business you get from financial analyses. Often, the data is used only for financial reporting, and doesn't necessarily need to be corrected on the source document.

On the General Ledger Entries page, the Correct Dimensions action lets you correct dimensions on posted entries by editing the dimension value, adding new dimensions, or removing them. Administrators can also lock dimensions for corrections, specify that corrections must respect closed accounting periods, and view a change log for a given G/L entry in order to revert the entry to its original value.
