I would really really like this feature to be added in to Dynamics NAV and the only way I can think of getting it is to get lots of people to vote for the suggestion.
Can you please click on this link http://www.microsoft.com/Businesssolutions/Community/NewsGroups/dgbrowser/en-us/default.mspx?fltr=,4,&lang=en&cr=US&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.navision and find the posted suggestion of the title "Export objects as FOB, Text or XML", open the post and vote I agree.
Why do I want this?
It would make life so much easier (particularly for upgrades) if I could write my own code to automate the process. Yes I know there is a development tool and this has a merge wizard but I find this hard to use, takes a long time to setup and I cannot extend it in any way.
If you agree that this feature would make your life as a developer considerably better, please, please take 5 minutes and vote for the suggested product enhancement.
That's already planned for "6.0", it was added to enable form transformation.
Yes I heard that too. In that case it shouldn't be too hard for them to release this as a feature of 5.0 SP1 or maybe as SP2.
Maybe it's just me but when we have to do upgrades, it's really hard to estimate the time required by differentiating the "real" changes from the "noise" - such as caption changes, changing field positions, etc.
If we had this feature I can not only make upgrades easier but can write other useful tools.
The FOB file format is closed and the Text file format is structured but cannot be easily worked with unless I do a lot of work.
I expect there will be a lot of upgrades to v5.0 happening in this coming year in preparation for v6.0 and I think we can use all the help we can get.
So far 12 out of 13 people have voted for this enhancement. I wonder how many votes you need to get to actually get a feature included in the product.
Automated object file read and write is actually supported by newer NAV clients: www.gotcal.com/.../dynamics-nav-and-the-rot-table.aspx
Your post just inspired me to a small blog post about the feature.
What a cool Blog Posting. I never knew you could do that! Sorry it took a while for your comment to make it on the post - I get so much spam on this blog that I have to review them.
Thanks, it reminded to implement the captcha image for the comments :-).
I just need to get some time to write the next post.
