How to open a backup file as a new company

This may be an easy question, but how do you open a backup file as a new company?  The reason we wish to do this is that we want to do some work with the financials of our business without affecting our current company file.

We have already created the backup, but whenever we try to open it, it opens the original company file instead.

Assistance is very appreciated.
  • You should set up a second Navision server - ours is just called test server, so we restore the backup into this different database and access the info there.

You Navision license allows you to have a second server running, for testing ect.  so you are fine with. I am not talking about a second physical server, just another instance of the server installed on the same same machine.

Without taking wild guesses, it hard to know what you want.

When I first saw the thread, I expected a question about how to import a backup into a Navision Databse, but with a different company name. That unfortunately can not be done.

So what actually are you trying to do? You can't "OPEN" a Navision backup, the only thing you can do is to restore it into an existing or a new database, which I am guessing is what you want to do. So let me at least explain this process.

Basically you can either import  abackup into an existing database, OR you can create  anew database from the backup. If ou create a new database, it involves the complication of creating a new server, or running the new database locally, which I guess you don't want. ...

To basically create playground type company in your live database do the following:

1/ Have everyone log of the system.
2/ Rename the current company to (eg) Playground - 2006-07-21
3/ Create  back up of company data
4/ Rename company back to original name
5/ Allow users to log back in
6/ restore backup so as to create the playground company.

If you can not log the users off, then do it this way
1/ Create  back up of company data
2/ Restore Backup into completely new database
3/ Rename the current company to (eg) Playground - 2006-07-21
4/ Create  back up of Playground company
5/ restore playground backup so as to create the playground company.

  • In reply to David Singleton:

    Let me clarify a bit.

We purchased a company which uses Navision for it's bookkeeping.  Unfortunately, two companies were stored as one company on the system, and we need the playground company in order to seperate the two companies' financials.

We are debating between purchasing a Navision license ourselves for this company, or having the data convereted for use in another format.  Running the database locally for a stand-alone setup would be preferable to running it as a playground company on their current database.

    Does this help?

Well that is a differnt story. And in this case you could not have picked a better time. MS have just introduced BRL pricing, which means that for companies exactly like you, the cost to get a single user licence is very very low. In this case, just purchase a single user licence, and restore a full baclup from the data. This will be much much cheaper than the cost of converting the data into anotehr format for you.

Your NSC will be able (wth glee) to help you with this.
