Master Planning--> Safety Stock Journal Related

All businesses start with a minimum stock holding for certain items. This is based upon a usage and lead time calculation (generally) with modifiers for other factors to smooth fluctuations in periodic demand. The safety stock journal enables the business to calculate what teh minimum should be based upon usage and metrics. Therefore you create the on hand to bring the lines into the journal. You then calculate the proposal based upon a factor of the proposed minimum, a service level metric (the higher means you have to cover all eventualities so obviously a higher stock holding) and then there is another option I cannot remember off the top of my head. This also allows you to set the proposal to the new minimum. If you then post the journal it updates all the minimum stock triggers in the item coverage records.

Essentially it is a automated way of suggesting a minimum stock holding based upon your historical issues and coverage requirements

Thanks Adam.. I understand the concept of safety stock journal.

But still while creating a line on Safety stock journal system never creates any line and if manuall i create line for an item and then run the calculate proposal system does not suggest any new minimum inventory proposal.

Here I am writing how i created transaction in the system:

1. I created 1 finished good BOM item FG 0001, which uses component RW 0001, RW 0002 (raw material).

2. For June , July, August on below dates i purchased raw material to produce FG 0001 for respective months:

6 june 2012 Purchased 100 qty of RW 0001, RW0002 and produced 50 qty of FG 0001, and sold 20 qty.

Similary for these dates 13/06, 20/6, 27/6, 3/07, 12/07, 21/07, 1/08, 11/08, 20/08 i created transactions.. to created 3 months data as this batch job requires 3 months data atleast. 

3. Now on 10 September 2012 if i try to craete line in safety stock journal, and want to calculate new minimum proposal for FG 0001. System is not creating any line.

Can you see, if something is missing in the transactions which   i had craeted.???

You cannot manually create a line in here and then run teh process because the system relies on all of the calculated fields populated during the creation when it calculates all of the issues and average usage. Can you post a picture of your creation screen so I can see the filters and settings?

Adam Thanks for the response. As i tried these trassactions with one of my client data so i am not able to post a screen shot here.

Actually on Microsoft partner source site i saw a HotFix Cummulative 3 which is released in june 2012. There is one issue 'On safety stock journal lines are not creating'. I will try to update with that Hotfix. Thanks.

Can you please suggest one scenario which i can run for creating line in safety stock Journal for minimum inventory proposal.

i.e. How should i set finished good, minimum inventory, Raw material, Minimum Inventory of rew material, Lead time for FG and RW,.

I am running to many scenarios but still not able to create lines.

So what are you doing?

Journal Lines - Create Lines. What are you then defining in the parametrs/filters?

Yes, I am creating Lines also as well as after lIne creation I need Calculate proposal to calculate Minimum Inventory.

Show me the inventory transaction screen that will refelect this statement, and HOW you are creating these:

1.       Since I had created the FG and RW in 01 June 2012. So now I will create 3 months transactions in the system (June, July, and August) to create Lines for this Item in Safety Stock Journal as on Today (September) and Then I will Calculate Minimum Inventory Proposal for FG 01 Item for September.

Without useage it will simply return nothing. If you run this on Contoso you will see transactions and sugggestions. Your proposal step is irrelevant until the calculations have been run.

Looks to me like they have broken it in AX2012, are you running CU2? try CU3 or try reporting it to Microsoft.

Just a thought as I have had this problem below:

Master planning > Journals > Safety stock > Create new > Journals lines > Create lines > Prior to making any further selections .... do you have in the item type field this --->  _ILLEGAL_VALUE_

It shows you this on the select, but looking at it there is only item and you cannot alter it. Something wrong in here.
