Hi,

Just want to know that apart from vba which I don't know: What versions of vb work with any version of Navision?

I know vb6 and I am learning vb1.1 and vb 2.0!

Hi Mr Singleton,

Thanks a lot for your reply

I am trying to get job in a company that uses Navision but the only thing I know is vb6 and sql server 7.0/2000/2005 database development.

I was told by the person that referred me that the company needs a programmer and database administrator(I don't mind learning sql server 2000 dba skills for I have the books)

What I want to know is what role does vb and sql server play in Navision : is it extend it or use Ado.net 2.0(which I have the book) to create reports?

I don't have ssrs books but I really want to join the company and I will not mind learning vb1.0/1.1/2.0 and Sql server dba skills.

Just tell me what you can use vb6/1.0/1.1/2.0 and sql server to do in an organisation that runs Navision?

Thanks a lot!

vb has no use in Navision what so ever. In fact when I ran a Navision Partner company, if an applicant had VB on his resume I would put it at the bottom of the list, since I always had problems with VB and Access developers not being able to switch over to Navision.

If you are looking at getting into this company, I would suggest you to download a demo version of Navision and learn the product. If a developer arrived in an interview with me, and already knew how to post invoices and adjust stock and create customers and apply checks, I would consider that this was someone that was serious and could be training to be a good developer.

Learning C/AL will take 2 weeks max, its a very easy development language. the hard part is learning where to write code, what to modify and what to leave alone. and most importantly understanding what happens to the data in the Database when you make a code change and the long term implications.

So learn Navision.

Hi Mr Singleton,

Thanks a lot for your reply. You are a darling!

Just curious what RDBMS does Navision use?

I'll download a trial version of Navision but as you said about where to code C/AL, what to modify, what to leave alone and understanding what happens to the data in the Database when you make a code change and the long term implications.

Any links you give me will be highly appreciated: both for beginning C/AL coding to expert use!

Thanks for your time!

I recommend you use Navision on SQL 2008. You manage this with SSMS. You can buy the developer edition of SQL server very cheap, this is  the best editionto learn on.

But to get started, FORGET the database, concentrate just on the application. install the demo version it will take care of a database.
